Palliative Care is a growing area of work in the NHS. Their website lists the diverse professional qualifications of the educators, reflecting how they come from a range of health care disciplines, and that a key skill is advanced communication. Among their core competences are the ability to explore and use interpersonal skills in such situations as the giving of significant news, dealing with anger, handling conflict, avoiding blocking behaviour, seeking consent, supporting and caring pain and suffering. So I was deeply pleased when I was invited to speak at their September conference arranged by the West Midland Forum at the University of Warwick.
The topic “Using your voice safely and effectively in teaching” is one I deliver in several parts of the university. It took place in the Cinema, a new speaking location for me. It was rather staggering to see the power point slides at full cinema-screen size!
