"To help people keep their voices healthy and to communicate effectively".
VCN is a learning and teaching organisation, generating and sharing knowledge within our membership and disseminiating and sharing knowledge with professional voice user groups and other interested external organisations and individuals.
We are unique professional organisation bringing together two disciplines, speech and language therapy and voice coaching.
VCN, and its members, learn from each other, adapt to change, keep up with developments and issues in relevant research and provide specification publications and regular newsletters. VCN has been delivering specialist voice workshops for over 10 years to professional occupational voice user groups, and organisations and individuals within Education, Call Centres, Healthcare, the Media and the Professions.

Alan Lyne was at the original gestation of the VCN! He and Roz, our Founder, had attended a meeting of the Voice Research Society in 1991 and returning (via the pub!) encouraged Roz to start up the VCN. Alan has now decided his days of delivering voice coaching are probably in the past (he has now reached the young age of 80!).
As a new member I was made very welcome. Everyone I met was supportive and willing to share their experiences. I am looking forward to attending Voice Workshops, ½ day or 1 day, specifically aimed at teachers of children and young adults. This would be helpful to me in my role as Speech and Drama teacher in Prep and Senior departments of a girl’s school.
The VCN were invited to provide a keynote speech to 250 SLT’s, surgeons and other professionals at the opening of the STEM EXPERTISE CENTRUM at the University of Leuven, which is about 30 kms east of Brussels.
In the final 2008 ASM session on Sunday, Agata and Jadwiga told us about the voice situation in Poland, then encouraged us to join them in practical work. Exercises for resonance, registers and intonation aimed for good posture, deepening breathing, strengthening the muscles involved in voice production, “painting” sound with “colours” and making Big Hungry bear groans to centre the voice.
This is a useful book on breathing. It has seventeen chapters by different practitioners with detailed exercises, general overviews, personal experiences and academic research grouped together in four sections covering breath and the body, the mind, holistic practice and performance.
Christina Shewell’s ‘Voice Work’ is a ‘tour de force’. On receiving the book a moment of panic set in when I realized the size and scope of the volume. But nothing could be further from the truth. Once you begin you are compelled to keep reading.
This is a book of 48 voice exercises from 28 voice therapists. The contributors are international but largely drawn from the USA. There is an accompanying CD containing recordings of 21 of the exercises – these being exercises that benefit from having an aural model.
Our very own publication of poetry, edited by one of our long standing VCN members - Heather Kay, was recently reviewed in 'Speaking English' - the Journal of the English Speaking Board International, by Tish Nicoll.
“Voice Catcher” was launched at the Actors Centre, Covent Garden on Tuesday 2nd June. It was a splendid venue for introducing the Anthology and a cool haven on a hot day.
A practical course for achieving clarity and expression with your voice. David Carey and Rebecca Clark Carey. The Vocal Arts Workbook and DVD is a comprehensive learning programme with a particular emphasis on teaching and learning voice in the classroom.
An Imaging method for revealing vocal-fold vibration in voice disorders. Cymo BV, supported by STW and Groningen Voice Research Lab is producing a new generation videokymographic system.
Richard Tyrell, Drama Teacher at Mayfield School, Portsmouth, celebrated World Voice Day on April 16th at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth with Kay Lowery and her Romeo and Juliet workshoppers, with a pre rehearsal Voice Session.
BBC Coventry & Warwickshire responded with spirit to the idea of celebrating World Voice Day. Yes, they would like an interview with the VCN. This was confirmed, checked and broadcast on April 16 with Liz Kershaw on the Breakfast Show, accompanied by regular references to the VCN and World Voice Day among many other topics.
Not wanting to miss out on World Voice Day, which fell during the holidays, Mayfields School’s Drama Club, consisting of year sevens and eights, (get them on board when they are young!) celebrated their own World Voice Day on 3rd April with some poetry readings.
