Tips on how to use your voice more effectively, keep it healthier, and general ideas on how to utilise it better.

About Us

Our Mission

"To help people keep their voices healthy and to communicate effectively".

VCN is a learning and teaching organisation, generating and sharing knowledge within our membership and disseminiating and sharing knowledge with professional voice user groups and other interested external organisations and individuals.

We are unique professional organisation bringing together two disciplines, speech and language therapy and voice coaching.

VCN, and its members, learn from each other, adapt to change, keep up with developments and issues in relevant research and provide specification publications and regular newsletters. VCN has been delivering specialist voice workshops for over 10 years to professional occupational voice user groups, and organisations and individuals within Education, Call Centres, Healthcare, the Media and the Professions.

Who We Are

Trustees generally serve for 3 years, acting as the Governing Body, meeting approximately four times per year with a clear agenda under the guidance of the Chairman.

Trustees typically represent either one of the two principle areas of expertise (SLT or Voice Coach) and commit their time free of charge.

Members' CPD Events

All VCN members have an interest in the 'Voice' and most a professional interest. Many members are either Speech and Language Therapists, working with patients with voice disorders, or Voice Coaches, many of whom are also qualified teachers. All professionals have a responsibility for their own Continuing Professional Development (CPD), to regularly update their knowledge, skills and share the latest research and best practice. The VCN provides a number of CPD opportunities throughout the year in various parts of the country:
  1. The Spring and Autumn Study Days – usually a Saturday, where specialist speakers are booked to lead on a particular topic or theme (See reviews of recent events). These are open to both members, guests and non-members. Please see recent study day reviews for 2009 (Spring, Autumn) and 2008.
  2. Members Regional CPD 'meet and share' days are also open to all. These days are usually led by 2 or 3 senior VCN tutors, but allow for all members attending to contribute to the chosen theme by illustrating a particularly useful exercise or piece of knowledge gained with a particular occupational voice user group with which they have direct experience.
  3. The Annual Study Meeting (ASM) is usually held over the weekend in the first week of September (Friday evening through to Sunday lunchtime) Please see recent ASM reviews for meetings held in 2009, 2008 and 2007.
  4. Prospective Tutor Meetings are held when the VCN needs to expand its current number of specialists around the country. Please see the Tutor Network.

Roz and David honoured with Lifetime Membership at ASM

At a recent meeting of the Trustees it was agreed to honour both Roz and David’s individual contributions to the VCN by Lifetime Membership awards. They individually now have Honorary Membership and are invited to attend all VCN Study Days and weekends as our guests.

Alan Lyne: Honorary Member

Alan Lyne was at the original gestation of the VCN! He and Roz, our Founder, had attended a meeting of the Voice Research Society in 1991 and returning (via the pub!) encouraged Roz to start up the VCN. Alan has now decided his days of delivering voice coaching are probably in the past (he has now reached the young age of 80!).

New Member Letter - Pat Madge, Annual Study Meeting Bristol 2008

As a new member I was made very welcome. Everyone I met was supportive and willing to share their experiences. I am looking forward to attending Voice Workshops, ½ day or 1 day, specifically aimed at teachers of children and young adults. This would be helpful to me in my role as Speech and Drama teacher in Prep and Senior departments of a girl’s school.

International

We are delighted to welcome international members. If you wish to get in touch with any of our international members, please contact head office. We currently have members in Belgium, Iceland and Poland.

Your Voice

Your Voice

Your Voice is produced when your brain is stimulated. The cry at birth uses your voice for the first time. You listen to your parent’s voices as you grow up. You copy and repeat what you hear gradually learning words and developing your way of speaking with the rhythms, intonation and pronunciation that you hear.

Wise Warm-Ups

‘Voicing’ is a muscular activity affected by our mental state. Since mind and body work together, doing some physical stretching and warming of the muscles which make voice,  will prepare you to sound clear and strong and, in turn, help  you look, sound and feel clear and strong! Your listeners will get the message first time round!
