Vocal Arts Workbook and DVD

A practical course for achieving clarity and expression with your voice. David Carey and Rebecca Clark Carey. The Vocal Arts Workbook and DVD is a comprehensive learning programme with a particular emphasis on teaching and learning voice in the classroom.

From the outset the book might look somewhat ambitious in terms of the voluminous amount of material and strategies that are included; however, the authors have made a dynamic attempt to guide, develop and motivate the student to engage critically with the fundamental tenets that contribute to the basis of this practically based vocal learning programme.

Core areas encompass relaxation, release and alignment techniques; optimising breath and voice demands for performance; pitch and resonance development and subsequent connection with the intentions of the speaker; finally, propagating the effectiveness of the voice via articulation and muscularity.

One of the strengths of this book is the fact that the authors acknowledge that students will have different levels of expertise regarding knowledge and prowess with practical activities. The authors are clearly sensitive and responsive to the individual needs of students, qualities that have been acquired during their work at a number of extremely highly-regarded drama schools and universities in the UK and USA.

Each chapter is subdivided into six areas:

Framework which offers a basic anatomical awareness of the ensuing chapter; exploration, which attempts to establish the student's starting point in relation to the material presented and heightens individual awareness of one's own voice in the classroom or on the stage; exercises which concentrate on the specific requisites of the chapter; follow-up, which encourages the student to keep a journal of progress and understanding and to make a connection between vocal use in and outside the class; the last two sections suggest texts to underpin the exercises and provide guidance on further reading.

The DVD is a vital companion to the book. The exercises are clear and carefully explained. Health and safety issues are adhered to rigorously. Many of the exercises are given imaginative and sometimes catchy new titles e.g., open eagle, slug tongue and granny dance. However, there is little new in the actual content. The DVD is somewhat uninspiring in its presentation and production values.

Overall, this book is an excellent source of reference for the novice voice student.
